When to convert GLB to glTF

  • For Roblox Studio

    Roblox's 3D Importer lists .gltf, .fbx and .obj. A .gltf keeps PBR textures, which OBJ can't.

  • To read or edit the scene

    glTF's JSON is human-readable, so materials and node names are easy to inspect or tweak by hand.

Binary glTF 2.0

GLB is the single-file, binary form of glTF 2.0, the open format the Khronos Group published in 2017 for delivering 3D assets. Mesh, materials, textures and animation all travel in one file.

A .gltf file is the text form of glTF 2.0: a JSON scene description that points to a separate .bin buffer and image files, or embeds them as data.

Is this GLB to glTF converter free?

Yes. There is no account, watermark or limit on conversions. It accepts files up to 300 MB; how large a model your browser can handle depends on your device's memory.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser with the open-source three.js loaders and exporters, so your GLB never leaves your device.

Why is the .gltf larger than the GLB?

Everything is embedded in one file as base64 text, which is about a third larger than binary. The upside is a single file with no .bin or texture folder to lose.
